I know it’s only 6 games in the young season but these USA Today/ESPN and AP polls are very misleading to say the least.

The Preseason Top 25 that had the over-hyped UCLA ranked 13th drop out completely of the AP polls and is 24th in USA Today/ESPN. Even more concerning, juniors Tyler Lamb and Josh Smith have defected and opted to transfer which will hurt once Pac-12 play begins for Ben Howland’s young squad.

#3 Kentucky and #6 North Carolina our both experiencing point guard trouble with departures of 1st round NBA draft picks Marquis Teague and Kendall Marshall.

N.C. State transfer Ryan Harrow who was supposed to run the show for Calipari has looked nervous thus far averaging only 9.5 minutes a game !!!!

Not the start Wildcat nation had envisioned and forcing Cal to count on senior transfer Julius Mays and junior Jarrod Polson for heavy minutes making lives harder for Kyle Wiltjer and Nerleon Noels.

North Carolina hasn’t looked good at all, getting embarrassed by Butler and #1 Indiana. Those easy buckets Marshall set up Reggie Bullocks and James Michael McAdoo last year are non-existent and utterly missed. Point guard position is up for grabs and will have to be handled by committee by freshman Marcus Paige, Dexter Strickland or Leslie McDonald until someone takes the reigns.

So how about we reward the schools who have won and played great competition, and talk about schools have impressed the college basketball world:

No surprise here, Indiana has looked scary dominant in their wins early.

The Preseason #1 hasn’t disappointed. Tom Crean has the 2013 #1 pick Cody Zeller and he has led them to impressive home wins over Georgetown in an overtime thriller and a 24 point win over North Carolina. A great supporting cast in marksman Jordan Hulls, do it all defender Victor Oladipo and scoring wing Christian Watford have them looking to play in April.

Some how that other team in B L U E in North Carolina always figures to be a tough out.

Coach K’s Duke Blue Devils are 7-0 and has great wins over then #3 Kentucky, Minnesota, #4 Ohio State and #2 Louisville. Still haven’t got major contribution from freshmen Rashaad Sulaman and Amile Jefferson which will make them that much more scary later in the year. Seniors Seth Curry, Ryan Kelly and Mason Plumlee have them afloat as the best team in the ACC.

How bout some love for the Buffaloes of Colorado???

Yes, I said it! Tod Boyle has the Colorado Buffaloes undefeated with a 5-0 mark and great neutral site wins against then #17 Baylor and a tough Murray State led by Preseason All-American Isaiah Cannan. Great recruiting the last couple years starting with NBA prospect Andre Roberson has them looking strong coming into PAC-12 conference play.

As well tough and gritty sophomore guards Askia Booker and Spencer Dinwiddie have led the way late in games, while 6-10 freshman Josh Scott has been averaging an efficient 14.5 points giving them a nice inside presence.

I’m sure other drama will occur in the next week so stay tuned.

Hungry Wolves? Minnesota Looking to End Their Playoff Drought

Can this be the year that the Minnesota Timberwolves return to the playoffs since the Kevin Garnett era? These young T-Wolves are making their case to end their nine year playoffless streak.

They’re off to a early 3-1 start and currently sitting third in the Western Conference without their franchise players Kevin Love and Ricky Rubio.Love who’s out for six weeks due to a broken hand and star point guard Ricky Rubio eyeing a return in late January to early February are off to a fast start looking to go from rebuilding team to a contending team to make the NBA Playoffs.

How are they doing this?

Well two of their first three victories have been at home against rebuilding teams in Sacramento Kings and Orlando Magic, and an impressive road victory against the heavily touted Brooklyn Nets.

Rick Adleman one of the most underrated coaches in league history has got this team to buy into playing defense and pushing the tempo when given the opportunity.

His current cast includes newcomers Brandon Roy, Alexey Shved, Chase Budinger, Dante Cunningham and Andrei Kirilenko.

Now none of these names jump off the page, but surrounding the nucleus of Love, Rubio and last year’s surprise big man Nikola Pekovic and you have a recipe for success.

Roy, the 2007 NBA Rookie of the Year and former three-time NBA Allstar is coming off a one year retirement due to having no cartilage in both knees is in his comeback trail.

Fresh off his plasma treatment in Germany that NBA superstars Kobe Bryant and Paul Pierce received in their knees, is off to a solid start averaging 5.8 points and leads the team in assists at a 5.5 clip.

Adding to the mix you have the stars off the Russian Olympic team Kirilenko who brings his do-it-all versatility averaging 12.5 points, team leading 7.5 rebounds, 3.5 assists, 1.5 steals and a huge 2.5 blocks.

Kirilenko stepped away from the NBA like Roy due to nagging injuries, but both are leading the Wolves until their superstar Kevin Love returns to play.

Now I’m not ready to pencil them in as a lock to make the playoffs, with similar young teams in the West like the Houston Rockets, Phoenix Suns, Utah Jazz, and Golden State Warriors all eyeing those last two playoff seeds.

However, once Kevin Love and Ricky Rubio return I think they have a chance to eye the coveted six seed and affirm their position as a potential sleeper to get to the second of the playoffs.

Love who’s a walking double-double and loves the big shot late in games, will be surrounded with a decent supporting cast FINALLY!

A great backcourt of Roy and Rubio, a bruiser and inside presence in Pekovic, swiss-knife in Kirilenko and if the number 2 pick in Derrick Williams can ever live up to his billing they can be unbelievably a tough and scary team that will give everyone fits.

Lots of optimism in Minneapolis for these young Wolves to get back to the playoffs since the “Big Ticket” era of Kevin Garnett.

Thunder Shock! Harden traded to Houston in huge deal

Weird.

First thought that came to my head when I heard the ‘Bearded One’ James Harden reigning NBA Sixth Man of the year was shipped from the Thunder to the Rockets last night.

Harden was a huge part of the success of what Sam Presti has put together in Oklahoma City and now will no doubt be the leading role for Kevin McHale’s Houston Rockets.

Still though, why would you trade a versatile young Olympian away and add a headache that is Kevin Martin, rookie Jeremy Lamb and two FIRST ROUND picks?

Well for starters, Sam Presti s a genius.

Presti knew this day was coming as it was inevitable and impossible to sign both James Harden and Serge Ibaka to max contracts. So it ends with Harden being dealt.

The Thunder receive one of the best scorers in the league in Martin, but he doesn’t defend, create or pass anywhere in the neighborhood of Harden,

However, Jeremy Lamb is an intriguing steal who just might replace Harden and Thabo Sefolosha all together.

There is no drop off with Lamb’s ability to defend multiple positions with his huge 7’2 wingspan, awareness and at 6’7 he can defend the best of small forwards and both guard positions.

Now he might not be All-NBA defensive team selection like Thabo, but he can do one thing he cant which is score consistently.

Lamb has proven this preseason he can score in bunches with his array of moves, finish with authority and ability to be lights out on the perimeter.

I have a feeling Martin doesn’t really fit the mold of the Scott Brooks system who holds players accountable for not playing hard which he struggles with.

On the flip side, I think this gives James Harden a chance to be the best two guard in the NBA.

Harden averaged nearly 17 points off the bench with two of the top five scorers in the NBA in three-time scoring champ Kevin Durant and Russell Westbrook. So his production will jump dramatically as a 20 plus scorer this year.

Not to mention Harden’s great all around game should relieve young point guard Jeremy Lin when the offense lags with his ability to get to charity stripe at will.

Still shocked that Harden plays for another team, but with an offer that Presti was presented how could you pass that.
